It’s Not About What We’re Ditching. It’s About What We’re Choosing Instead.

Things We Like Less as We Age. And Why That’s Something to Celebrate.

With every passing year, our priorities begin to shift—and often, so do our preferences. A recent BuzzFeed article titled 17 Things People Start To Like Less As They Get Older offers a funny and strikingly accurate look at the things many of us find ourselves avoiding in midlife and beyond. From loud bars to tight jeans to anything that involves unnecessary effort after 8 p.m., it turns out aging doesn’t mean slowing down, it means wising up.

And it’s not just about what we’re ditching, it’s about what we’re choosing instead.

Letting go of things that once felt essential or expected can be incredibly liberating. High heels, elaborate makeup routines, endless social events, and group texts with too many emojis? Hard pass. As we grow older, we begin to understand that peace, comfort, and genuine connection matter more than appearances or people-pleasing.

Many of us are now finding themselves craving simpler pleasures like a quiet morning drinking out of your favorite coffee mug, a walk with a friend, time to read a good book, or even a solo evening under a cozy blanket. These aren’t signs of giving up, they’re signs of clarity. Of finally asking, “What feels good to me?” and honoring the answer.

Interestingly, one of the most common themes in the BuzzFeed comments was the growing joy in saying no. No to plans that drain. No to conversations that go nowhere. No to uncomfortable clothing, overcrowded schedules, and doing things “just because.” In that space, people are saying yes to themselves which involves rest, reflection, and the things that actually spark joy.

This shift isn’t about becoming rigid or dull. It’s about becoming more intentional. When we strip away what we no longer enjoy, we create space for what we truly love, whether that’s time with chosen family, creative projects, hobbies, or wellness rituals that actually feel nurturing.

And let’s not forget…we still enjoy fun! We just define it differently now. Fun can be a quiet weekend getaway, an afternoon spent journaling, laughing with old friends over lunch, or discovering a new show without needing to binge it in one sitting (ahem, Tony). There’s beauty in slowing down, and power in choosing presence over pressure.

The best part? This isn’t just happening in isolation. More and more women are speaking openly about these shifts. From online to in their communities. There’s a shared recognition that the second (or third!) act of life doesn’t have to look like a race to stay young. It can look like a celebration of everything we’ve learned, and everything we’re becoming.

So the next time you turn down a crowded event or opt for a night in over a night out, remember: you’re not missing out…you’re tuning in. To yourself. To what matters. And that’s not boring. It’s brave!

Because growing older doesn’t mean liking less. It means liking differently and with much more intention.
